If making dildos from scratch isn’t your thing, we also have a pretty in-depth DIY male masturbator guide! Otherwise, take a look at our best household objects that double as safe sex toys for even easier alternatives!

Whether you’re crafty, business-oriented, or just can’t seem to find the perfect fit to satisfy your needs, learning how to make a sex toy can be a pretty appealing concept. Yet, the DIY dildo world can be a very confusing place to navigate.

This is exactly why, throughout the course of this article, we will look at how to make dildos for amateurs, hobbyists, as well as aspiring pros wishing to build a business around silicone toy making.

No matter what is your desired level of involvement, know that there’s definitely a solution for you. May it be ready-made, single-use kits and solutions or investing in your own full-on DIY silicone dildo lab! So if you ever wondered how to make the best homemade sex toys you can build, we have all the juicy info you’re craving!

But before we get into it, it’s important to know that, no matter which method you use, you’ll need to follow one very important sex toy design fundamental you have to know to make your own dildos:

A safe sex toy is a sex toy with a base

This is important for three reasons:

  1.  It makes holding your toys much easier and more convenient than having to share insertable real estate with your hands.
  2. It allows for your toys to stand on their own, which looks great on a bedside table.
  3. But most importantly, it’ll prevent you from losing your toys into the depth of your own silly self. Something that’ll come in handy if you ever want to use your DIY sex toys anally.

How to make a dildo the easy way

If you want to “build-a-dil” strictly for fun, and you’re not looking to make a dildo professionally, these kits are the way to go. They’ll make building one-of-a-kind toys enjoyable and as pain-free as possible.

But if you want to make multiple copies of your creations and distribute them, this might not be the best way to go.

This is simply because the quality of the dildos you will get out of these methods usually won’t meet the high standards required for distribution. It’ll also be very complicated to make some decent profit out of using these pre-made kits since they’re not available in bulk.

With that being said, they’re still awesome for personal use and gifts and definitely shouldn’t be ignored!

Clone-A-Willy

clone a willy diy dildo

This is probably the most popular and well-known option available today. It’s no surprise as this is the best homemade dildo kit for beginners around!

These kits allow you to make a silicone copy of your favorite penis in town. Something that can be quite a blessing, especially when you’ve found that rare perfect fit.

Of course, this option is especially popular for couples who’ll have to spend extended periods of time away from each other. But it’s also a great way to immortalize your love for the D, no matter what happens to the original!

It’s worth noting that this kit actually doesn’t stop you from molding other things than plain old dicks. So you can still have fun making sex toys out of your favorite phallic objects if you don’t have a penis handy!

These DIY silicone dildo kits come in multiple colors, ranging from natural skin tones to more colorful options.

There’s also an OK vibrator bundled with the kits, but it could be pretty underwhelming to some. But don’t worry about it too much since it’s completely optional to insert it in the finished product or not. And since it is done at the very last step, the decision shouldn’t hinder the process at all.

The real tricky part of the process is the molding itself.

You see, every step of the process has to be timed. So you have to fight against the clock as you mix your mold, get an erection, and leave it in there for 2 minutes.

While it is not impossible to achieve this on your own, it helps to have the two of you working at the task, with one of you dealing with the erection while the other takes care of the mixing and prepping.

How to keep an erection while it cures?

Viagra ( definitely check out services like Bluechew if you want to skip award doctor visits, plus you get your first month free when going through us! ), penis pumps, a naked significant other, and a good cock ring can also go a long way in helping you achieve and maintain an erection during this process.

If you do decide to put a cock ring on, make sure to wear it behind your testicles, otherwise, the ring will most likely appear on the finished product.

It is still easy to mess up a few times before getting a perfect mold down, so I highly suggest getting your own extra quick-set alginate just in case you ruin your initial mold.

Another caveat is that the instructions don’t tell you how to make a base for your sex toy.

But it is still rather easy to achieve this with this simple method:

  1. When you cut the extra tube length off the mold holder, save the cut-up part for later.
  2. Mold the penis as instructed.
  3. Once the mold is dry, tape the cut-up tube back where you removed it with just enough extra length for a base.
  4. Mix and pour the silicone as instructed while making sure you add extra thickness past the original mold.

Tadah! You’ve got your very own penis replica to add to your collection.

Of course, if you think that this D is too perfect not to be shared, nothing stops you from using the resulting copy to cast your own molds ( see how below ) and build an army of dildos to do your bidding.

If you don’t care much about buying ready-made kits, it’s also quite easy to make your own DIY Clone-A-Willy alternative for cheap.

To make a dildo using the Clone-a-willy method, all you’ll need is some quick-set alginate, a cut-up water bottle for the tube along with your own silicone mix and pigments.

How to Make a Dildo the Hobbyist and Pro Way

Wanna make the best homemade dildo you possibly can to a level where you can actually sell them? This is where things get serious!

If you’re looking for a finish closer to the toys you can buy in traditional sex shops and Etsy stores or if you’re planning on selling multiple copies of your creations, this method of silicone toy-making will work best.

Of course, this process is much more involved, but the quality you’ll get out of your homemade dildo creations along with the profits you can make if you do decide to sell them is much more rewarding than what you’ll get with the pre-made kits mentioned above.

This method is also the most expensive up front, but, once you’re set up, the cost of making your DIY sex toys will be way cheaper than any other method.

If you want to keep the price down, we’ve isolated optional steps from the process.

They’re not essential, but if you’re looking for a truly professional finish and quality, you’ll want to follow them still, especially if you’re looking into how to make your own dildos for sale and distribution!

The best silicone for sex toys

To make your own dildos in a body-safe manner, the only type of silicone safe for penetration is platinum cure silicone and the most popular supplier amongst indie sex toy makers is Smooth-On.

Now, Smooth-On makes all sorts of silicones that are unsafe for sex, so make sure you double-check before investing in buckets of it.

Another important thing to consider is the hardness of your DIY Dildos.

Shore durometer scale

This is measured with the Shore Durometer scale illustrated here by Smooth-On themselves.

Phallophile Reviews also has a pretty in-depth guide on sex toy hardness that could be handy if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

The most important thing to consider is that the harder the silicone, the more likely you’ll have to watch for bubbles getting trapped in your toys.

Unless you have a way to get rid of the bubbles ( more on this later ) you could be left with toys filled with little imperfections.

But if you want to stay on the safe side, the most popular options are Ecoflex for softer toys and Dragon Skin for harder but still realistically soft toys.

DIY dildo best silicone ecoflex

Ecoflex comes in 00-10, 00-20 and 00-30 hardness.

This means that bubbles will have less of a tendency of showing up in your finished product, so it is perfect for someone trying to keep the cost of equipment to a minimum.

00-10 is usually out of the question because it is so soft you won’t be able to use it for insertion.  But it could be used as an outside layer of a dual-density toy.

00-20  is perfect if you want to make masturbators, packers, very long depth toys, and particularly floppy dildos. It’s also a pretty good choice for the external layer of dual-density toys. So if you’re wondering how to make your own dildo with silicone squishy enough for most of your needs, this is it!

00-30 is the hardest Ecoflex and should be good enough for a homemade dildo. But it is still soft enough that the toy won’t stand on its own and flop about. So if hard toys are uncomfortable to you during penetration, it could still be a pretty decent option.

DIY dildo best silicone dragon skin

Dragon Skin comes in multiple hardnesses, but 10 A and 20 A should be the only ones you’ll ever need.

In most cases, you’ll at least need a pressure-curing setup. Even better if you invest in an additional vacuum degassing kit.

But frugal folks shouldn’t despair since the more popular 10 A comes in the NV version, which is low viscosity and should prevent you from having to Vacuum degas!

10 A is probably the only consistency you’ll need, it comes in a variety of pot lives and cure times, so pick the one that’ll work best for your workflow. This should work well for realistically hard dildos and dual-density cores. So if you’re looking to buy only one silicone for sex toy making, this is probably your best bet!

20 A and beyond is better for harder sex toys like g-spot toys and dual-density cores.  But these will absolutely require some degassing on your part if you want a bubble-free sex toy.

Amazon doesn’t seem to sell Smooth-On Silicone in Bulk, but the amounts provided there should be enough to get you started until you figure out if this is for you. If you do wish to pursue the hobby, we suggest buying buckets of it in bulk directly from Smooth-On.

How to sculpt your DIY dildo

This could be done in a variety of ways.

With this method, having an artistic eye will help since you’ll be sculpting your toys from scratch. But it is also possible to cast real limbs and phallic objects like in the Clone-A-Willy section above to make your dildo molds.

As mentioned above, it’s also very important you include a base since it’ll not only make casting your toys easier, but it’ll also allow your toys to stand on their own and become much safer to use in the process.

diy dildo sculpting

One of my favorite methods is simply using Sculpey to shape my toys.

Once you’re happy with the results, bake your sculpture and let it cool.

Optional Pro Step: Adding a coat of Mod Podge to the finished sculpture will make your creation much smoother and this will, of course, translate in your final product.

To do this, simply brush it on or finger paint it thinly all over your sculpture and set it to dry.

3d printing diy dildo

Another great method is using 3D software like ZBrush, 3Ds Max, or Blender (which is free) to model your dildo.

Our personal favorite for organic shapes is Zbrush, but if you can’t afford it, Blender will do just fine.

This has the major benefit of giving you the option of easily offering smaller and larger versions of your toys without having to completely resculpt them from scratch.

If 3D modeling your own dildos feels a bit too involved, you can also use something like the dildo generator.

You’ll have less control over your creation, but it definitely can be a fun way to easily personalize a dildo.

Once your 3D model is ready, send your files to either a 3D printing service website or to your own 3D printer.

The best printers for the price right now are the Creality Ender 3 & the Prusa i3 MK3s. Printing quality is great on both devices, though the Prusa is much easier to use out of the box.

After your model is printed, give it a light sanding & priming to remove the grain off the print and you’re done!

How to make your silicone mold

This is a crucial step in how to make a sex toy that is replicable to infinity and beyond. So if you want to make many copies of your dildos that you can easily resell in volumes, this is probably the most important step to get right.

First, you will need a good molding medium. We like Mold Star 16 Fast by Smooth-On because it’s simple to use, cures fast, and doesn’t require any degassing.

DIY dildo how to make silicone mold

It’s also a good middle ground in terms of hardness, and from there you can try harder molding mediums like the Mold Star 30 to see what you prefer to work with.

While it isn’t optimal, if you wish to keep your price to a minimum, you could always use DragonSkin 10 A or 20 A for both your toys and your mold, but anything softer will make molding your toys extremely difficult.

Next, you will need a container to hold your mold as it cures.

You can use a variety of containers here, may it be smooth airtight boxes, water jugs, or anything else that’ll fit your toys and then some. Just make sure the container you use can contain viscous liquids without leaking or breaking.

Our favorite method is building our own custom Boxes with Legos.

This makes freeing your silicone dildo molds much easier and your boxes are infinitely recyclable. Just make sure the bottom of your box lands on the smooth side of your lego blocks to avoid any issues.

Bricks can easily be bought in bulk on Amazon.

For reference, here’s a little model I made to show how to orient your bricks:

Excuse the shitty 3D model… I gave away all my Legos to my nephew

Of course, when molding, you won’t have the box on its side like this and you’ll want to have it standing with the hole facing up.

The molding process

First, put your sculpture or cast at the bottom of your box like in the picture below.

This is where a good base will come in handy.

While it isn’t entirely necessary, still spray a thin coat of silicone release spray inside the box. Get it all over your creation and inside the walls of the box.

We like doing this just to be safe since it’ll prevent your silicone from sticking to the model and box.

If you’re casting an object that is already made of silicone, the Mann Ease Release 200 is mandatory because it’ll prevent the silicone of the mold and the object from bonding to each other.

If you can’t find this particular brand, most other silicone mold release sprays should work just as well.

Now you will need to mix your molding medium thoroughly and fast so you don’t exceed the pot-life time limit found in your silicone mix instructions.

So make sure you’re mixing enough to cover your creation completely.

Mold Star 16 is simple enough to mix since all you’ll need is a 1:1 mixture. Thankfully, the two parts are of different colors, so just mix until the color becomes uniform. If you’re using any other uncolored silicone, you could tint one part with pigments ( more on these later ) and leave the other clear to make sure both parts are mixed properly.

It’s also a good idea to use mixing bowls and utensils that you won’t mind never using in the kitchen again.
Personally, I prefer using dedicated graduated pots because they’re cheap and make measuring easier as you mix.

DIY dildo graduated pots for mixing silicone

Now it’s time to pour the mixture over your creation.

The trick here is to pour a thin stream of silicone from as high as you can ( while still being accurate ) and aim at the side of your container while letting the silicone settle around your sculpture. This process will prevent bubbles from getting trapped in the mix.

Continue pouring until the sculpture is completely covered.

Set the remaining silicone aside in its mixing pot while you let the mixture cure for the amount of time shown in your silicone instructions.

Optional Pro Step: Pressure curing will also help to remove any bubbles that could get trapped in your mold. This can be done for relatively cheap with a pressure pot for paint and a simple air compressor.

Follow the steps found in this video to set up your kit.

Once set up, just put your box containing the sculpture and silicone mixture inside of your pot and let it cure at about 40 PSI of pressure for the entirety of the curing process.

Once it is cured, make sure to release the pressure before opening your pot.

Before attempting to free your sculpture from the mold, check on the remaining silicone in your mixing bowl. If it is solid and easy to remove, curing should be about done.

Remove the sculpture as well as the box carefully so you’re only left with the silicone sex toy mold and nothing else.

Voilà! You now have a perfectly reusable mold for replicating your DIY sex toys over and over again.

How to color your silicone sex toys

Now we’re finally at the step of actually making a dildo!

But before any of this, you’ll most likely want to color your silicone to a color of your liking.

DIY dildo color pigments

To achieve this, you will need some good pigments like the great Silc Pig by Smooth-On.

A container or a cheap sampler kit will be enough to make tons of dildos and mix pretty much any color you’ll need. So a little investment really goes a long way here!

It’s also worth noting that the more you’ll mix, the brighter and more saturated the colors will get.

DIY dildo glow in the dark glow worm

Smooth-On also makes a pretty cool glow-in-the-dark pigment called the Glow Worm.

It comes in green and blue and, just like the Silk pig, the more you put in, the bigger the glow you’ll get.

DIY dildo cosmetic mica

Cosmetic Mica is another great option if you’re looking for more colors, sparkles, or a real deep black.

Just make sure you’re buying a body-safe Mica since not all of them are good for internal use.

How to mix your colors

Mixing the colors of your homemade sex toys is a lot like mixing any other type of paint.

Our favorite method is to color only Part A (of the two silicone parts) with the pigments. This will not only leave you with more time to color your silicone sex toys but it’ll also ensure a uniform mix of the two parts when the time comes to mix it all up.

If you want, you can go crazy with your pour methods to create marbled designs, gradients, or any of that fancy stuff! It’s really not that complex once you see how colors interact with each other.

Once you have your mold handy and you’re ready to mix the colored part A to part B, proceed just like with the molding process.

Optional Pro Step: At this point, if you’re using a Silicone with a high viscosity, you might want to do some silicone degassing to get rid of as many bubbles as possible.

You’ll need a

Vacuum Pump & Chamber and follow the process found in this handy video.

It is now finally time to pour the silicone into your mold!

This step is exactly like when you poured your mold except it is now mandatory to spray Mann Ease Release 200 into your mold beforehand. Otherwise, the two silicones will bond and you’ll have to make a new mold from scratch.

So repeat all the steps from the mold pouring process above but this time around, you’ll be pouring into the silicone sex toy mold.

Now set your homemade sex toys to cure in the open or in the pressure chamber at around 40 PSI for the amount of time required by the silicone you’re using.

Once this is done, pull it out, give it a good wash with some grease-fighting detergent (e.g.: dish soap) and you’re done! You now are officially the owner of a homemade silicone dildo!

Other advanced methods

So there it is! Almost everything you need to know about how to make a dildo at home from scratch!

Yet, this only scratches the surface of the toy-making process and if you wish to push the limits of what is possible, you’re only limited by your own ingeniosity and creativity.

For example, with some additional steps, you could make dual-density toys like in this helpful video.

It’s double the work, but definitely worth it! And these bad boys are all the rage these days

Diy squirting dildo

Or add food-safe tubing and a syringe to make your own DIY ejaculating dildo!

Of course, you’ll want to make sure the tube is held under tension by modifying the mold a bit. Or you can simply use a placeholder rod of the same circumference as the tube and add the tube later.

Diy suction cup dildo

You could even create suction cups!

Just use prep bowls like these on top of your dildo molds during the curing process to make your very own homemade suction cup dildo!

DIY vibrating dildo

Using a similar method, you can make a DIY vibrator by adding a bullet hole to your base!

Just make sure you use something like a piece of cardboard like in the clone-a-willy entry to hold your objects so they don’t sink into the silicone sex toy during the curing process.

Making a vibrating dildo is a lot simpler than you’d think if you use a traditional bullet vibe, but if you have some electronics knowledge, you could also integrate your own motor into the mold as well with an outside switch and everything.

DIY dildo for sex machine

Want to make a dildo to fit on some of the best sex machines? Just add a Vac-U-Lock plug hole to it!

This is almost identical to the above process for turning your dildos into vibrators!

Now, you shouldn’t use the Vac-U-Lock connector to make your dildo hole. Instead, you’ll want to make a smooth hole that is 3/4 inch in diameter, and 4.5 inches deep at the base of your dildo.

For this, I recommend using a 3/4 inch diameter rod ( or pipe that has been sealed on the inserted end ) inserted 4.5 inches deep into the dildo and held in place like in the step above!

So there it is! Everything you always wanted to know about how to make a homemade dildo! I can’t wait to see ( and maybe even buy & advertise! ) your future DIY dildo creations!
