What is Ozempic libido?
It seems like half of Hollywood is on Ozempic these days. From Elon Musk to Oprah to James Cordon to Sharon Osbourne; more and more celebrities are jumping on the medically-aided weight loss train and talking about it publicly.
It’s not just celebrities who are talking about the drug. More and more people on Reddit, TikTok and other social media platforms are talking about it and a new association is emerging. According to some, Ozempic has supercharged their sex drive. This claim has gained so much traction that even The Wall Street Journal wrote about it.
But what’s really going on here? Is there actually a drug that can make you lose weight and get horny, all in one go? Is this Viagra but better? As you might expect, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

A Primer on Semaglutides
Ozempic is a brand name for a popular drug that uses semaglutide, a GLP-1 agonist, as the active ingredient. There are a few other drugs, like Wegovy and Mounjaro, that are also included in the GLP-1 agonist category and can be prescribed for weight loss.

Inspired by a lizard, this synthetic substance helps your body regulate blood sugar levels by boosting insulin levels, which can be a life-saving treatment for people living with diabetes.
Ozempic actually isn’t a weight-loss drug, but it does tend to have that effect. This side effect has encouraged its off-label use for weight loss.
GLP-1 is a satiety hormone that can signal to your brain that you are full. GLP-1 agonists mimic this hormone. Not only does it make you feel fuller longer, but it can also decrease your cravings. This is because it mediates the reward pathways in the brain, reducing the dopamine signals we get when we eat food or satisfy a craving.
What are people saying about Ozempic and their sex drives?
Over the last year, there have been reports of Ozempic supercharging their libidos. Some say that they went from wanting sex once a month to several times a week. Some went from weekly to daily.
On Reddit, someone asked, “Anybody else dealing with an insatiable desire for sex?” while someone else commented, “my sex drive was low from being 3 months postpartum and my zoloft, but with ozempic I constantly want it now”, and they’re not alone. There definitely seems to be a group of people who are gaining more than blood sugar control.
Particularly over the last few months, articles and social media posts have been fueling a buzz about the drug’s beneficial effect on users’ sex lives. But that’s certainly not the whole story.
Many others are reporting the opposite: a complete loss of libido. Some even go so far as to describe themselves as a zombie on the drug.
So what does the science say?

While GLP-1 agonist’s effects on blood sugar are great for people living with diabetes, prescribing semaglutide to non-diabetic men with obesity actually increases their risk of erectile dysfunction.
The few studies investigating GLP-1 agonist’s effects on sexual behavior have found mixed results. The one in mice showed reduced sexual interaction, while the one in humans found no significant differences at all.
But these studies were done in healthy subjects. And as we just saw a few sentences ago, the effects vary greatly depending on who is taking the drugs.
Given that these drugs mediate your dopamine response to rewards, this is a likely reason as to why some people are reporting that their addictions are easier to manage. Sex is rewarded by this system, so a reduction in dopamine on account of the meds could definitely reduce your cravings for sex.
Interestingly, a study published a few months ago showed that men with Type II diabetes and hypogonadism had improved sperm morphology on semaglutide vs testosterone replacement therapy. As far as we know, better sperm quality doesn’t equate to more horniness, but clearly something is going on and more studies are needed.
Diabetes or drugs?
We may not know much about what Ozempic does for your sex drive, but we know more about what diabetes does to it. Diabetes constricts and damages your blood vessels, which leads to erectile dysfunction.

But it’s not just a problem for those of us with a penis. As we all learned from Come As You Are, we’ve all got the same parts, just organized differently. Everyone living with diabetes is more likely to experience low libido.
But not everyone is comfortable talking about their sex lives. Especially if you developed diabetes slowly, or have lived with it for a long time, you might think that your sex drive is operating normally. You might have just gotten used to your lower libido. Then you take a drug that improves your diabetes and all of a sudden, your body is working on a level you’re not used to! BAM! Your normal sex drive feels insane!
What else could be going on?
As one Reddit user said, there was a contrast between using Zoloft and using Ozempic. Other drug interactions are certainly possible. Drugs.com lists 272 drugs known to interact with semaglutide.
Semaglutide also interacts with alcohol, so it is recommended to avoid alcohol use while on it. We’ve all heard of “whiskey dick” and while alcohol can often increase one’s appetite for sex, it also leads to erectile dysfunction. Just as with diabetes control, cutting out alcohol can have profound impacts on one’s health, which includes sexual health.
Speaking of health, Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs are encouraged to be taken alongside diet and lifestyle changes. Eating healthier food and exercising can dramatically improve body composition, especially when combined with a drug that also causes weight loss. When your body is healthier, everything works better.
When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you FEEL good ( if you catch my drift ).
A key component of sexual arousal is psychological.
If you don’t feel great about yourself or your appearance, it can be a lot harder to feel comfortable being so intimate and vulnerable.
One big piece of this puzzle is that when people start losing weight, they get a rush of excitement and self-confidence. They feel better about how they look, how they feel and they might even feel like showing off. What a great turnaround in self-perception!
When the mind stops stressing about appearance, it’s free to relax and enjoy sensual pleasure.
When one can feel proud and joyful in their own body, that’s where you can REALLY have fun!
What do you do if you do experience a change in your libido while on Ozempic?
If you’re a good candidate for Ozempic and want to give it a try, it has great potential to really help you regain enjoyment in your life.
The effect it may have on your libido could be positive or negative, but thankfully, these side effects seem to be rare. Of those who do experience a change in their libido, there’s also no evidence of irreversible permanent changes.
As with any medical side effects, it’s important to let your doctor know of any changes you’re experiencing. Together you can decide the best way forward. Maybe a dosage adjustment is all that’s needed, or maybe you’ll decide to stop it altogether.
Be aware that discontinuing treatment will bring your previous cravings back and many patients regain the weight. This is why diet and lifestyle changes are so critical. Change your habits while it’s easy so that you can rely on habit to get you through the challenges.
What can you do to improve your sex drive without Ozempic?
Fortunately, you don’t need to be on Ozempic to enjoy improved sex lives.
Since a lot of the positive libido effects are attributable to a healthier body, you can often achieve these effects without medication. It will just be more challenging.
All forms of exercise improve your blood flow, which can really ramp up your horniness. Strength training in particular boosts testosterone levels, and can lead to an even more dramatic increase in sex drive.
Set yourself up for success by tapping into a supportive community, be that in a dance class, group sport, or the gym. They can help keep you motivated and on track when you experience challenges. Make the healthiest choice the easiest choice. The more automatic you can make things, the better.
Reconnect with yourself and start unlearning shame, worthlessness, and fear-based self-perceptions. This is easier said than done, and will likely be lifelong practice, but the payoff will be worth it!
A great relationship with oneself lays a solid foundation for sexual satisfaction with others.
Weighing the pros and cons
Deciding to take a medication, or not, is a big decision. Living with chronic conditions like obesity, overweight and diabetes is not as simple as it is often portrayed. It didn’t take a week to get you where you are, and it won’t take a week to get you out.
For many people facing significant health challenges, GLP-1 agonists can serve as a life-saving intervention.
In some situations, the risks associated with taking it are worth accepting. In others, maybe not. No one can make that decision for you better than yourself, but it helps to be informed.
Be patient and listen to yourself.
