Intro

Whether you're crafty, business-oriented or you just can't seem to find the perfect toy shape to satisfy your needs, DIY sex toys can be a very appealing concept.

Yet, the DIY dildo world can be a very confusing place to navigate.
So throughout the course of this article, we will look at solutions for amateurs, hobbyists, as well as aspiring pros who wish to build a business around making their own sex toys.

And no matter what is your level of involvement, there's a solution for you.
May it be ready-made, single-use kits to keep things simple or investing in your own glorified DIY dildo lab!

But before we get into anything else, it's important to know that, no matter which method you use, you'll need to follow one very important sex toy design fundamental:

A safe sex toy, is a sex toy with a base!

diy dildo

This is important for two reasons:

  1.  It makes holding your toys easier than having to share insertable real-estate with your hands.
  2. But most importantly, it'll prevent you from losing your toys into the depth of your own self. Something that'll come especially handy if you ever want to use your DIY sex toys anally.

With that being said, read on to learn more about how to make DIY sex toys in the comfort of your own home.

Pre-Packaged DIY Dildo Kits

Where these kits shine is when you want to make toys for yourself or loved ones.

They'll make building unique, one-of-a-kind toys fun and as pain-free as possible.
But if you wish to make multiple copies and distribute your toys, this might not be the best way to go.

This is simply because the quality of the toys you will get out of these methods usually won't meet the high standards required for distribution.
But it will also be very complicated to make some decent profit out of using these pre-made kits since they aren't available in bulk.

That being said, they're still awesome for personal use and gifts and shouldn't be ignored!

Clone A Willy

clone a willy diy dildo

This is probably the most popular and well-known option available today.

The Clone A Willy kits will allow you to make a silicone copy of your favorite penis in town.
Something that can be quite a blessing, especially when you've found that rare perfect fit.

Of course, this option is especially popular for couples who'll have to spend extended periods of time away from each other.
But it's also a great way to immortalize your love for the D, no matter what'll happen with the original!

It's worth noting that this kit actually doesn't stop you from molding other things than penises though.
So have fun making toys out of your favorite phallic objects if you don't have a penis handy!

These DIY dildo kits come in multiple colors, ranging from natural skin tones to more colorful options.

There's also an ok vibrator bundled with the kits, but it could be pretty underwhelming to some.
But don't worry since it's optional to insert it in the finished product or not in the very last step.

The real tricky part of the process is the molding itself.
You see, every step of the process has to be timed and you have to fight against the clock to mix your mold, get an erection and shove it in there for 2 minutes, all at the same time.

While it is not impossible to achieve this on your own, it helps to have two of you working at the task, with one of you working on the erection while the other takes care of the mixing and prepping.

It is still easy to mess up a few times before getting a perfect mold down, so we highly suggest getting your own extra quick-set alginate just in case you mess up your mold.

Viagra, penis pumps, a lack of clothing from your significant other, and a good cock ring can also go a long way to help you reach and maintain your erection during the whole process.
If you do decide to put a cock ring on, make sure to wear it behind your testicles, otherwise, the ring will probably appear on the finished product.

Another caveat is that the instructions don't tell you how to make a base for your sex toy.
But it is still rather easy to achieve with this simple method:

  1. When you cut the extra tube length off the mold holder, save the cut up part for later.
  2. Mold the penis like instructed.
  3. Once the mold is dry, tape the cut up tube back where you removed it with just enough extra length for a base.
  4. Mix and pour the silicone like instructed while making sure you add extra thickness past the original mold.

And Tadah! You've got your very own penis replica to add to your collection of trophies.
Of course, if you think that this D is too perfect not to be shared, nothing stops you from using the resulting copy to cast your own molds ( see how below ) and raise an army of dildos to do your bidding.

If you don't care much about buying ready-made kits, it's also quite easy to make your own Clone A Willy kit for cheap.
All you'll need is some quick-set alginate, a cut up water bottle for the tube along with your own silicone mix and pigments.
For more info on what types of silicones and pigments are best for this, make sure to read the corresponding entry in the hobbyist/pro section of this article!

Squarepeg's Peg Away Putty

DIY dildo silicone putty

This innovative product is probably the most fun way to make and/or modify your silicone toys.

It's essentially a silicone putty that, once activated, will adhere to any other platinum cure silicone, allowing you to customize your toys to your liking.

This, of course, doesn't stop you from making your own DIY sex toys from scratch, but this will drive the price way up since you'll need much more putty to achieve this.
If you're unsure as to how much you will need for making your own toys, Squarepeg states that 1/3 of an OZ of putty is about the size of a Bic pen.

Be vigilant if you wish to modify your favorite toys since changes done them are permanent and you won't be able to remove it once the silicone putty cures.

So whether you want to add texture to your dildos, bump up your prostate toys for extra stimulation and comfort or make your own toys, this putty has a lot to offer.

The Peg Away Putty comes in 4 different kits.
It's essentially the same product no matter which kit you buy, but the real difference will be the quantity of putty included.

All the kits come only in black except for the "Make It Yours!" kit, which offers enough basic colors to mix any type of colors you might want.

Otherwise, if you're planning on making your own toy from scratch, the "Bump It Up!" kit is of better value since you can order larger amounts of it for cheaper.
But it's worth noting that this kit only comes in black.

How it works

First, you'll need a safe surface to work on, since some materials will interfere with the success of your DIY project.
If you want to avoid any issues, aluminum foil or waxed paper are your safest choices.

While they're not mandatory, if you have sensitive skin, Squarepeg offers specific gloves for working with the putty.
Avoid using any other gloves made of Latex, vinyl or nitrile since they'll prevent the curing process from working properly.

If you're modifying an existing toy, will also need to de-grease it thoroughly.
Using a good grease-fighting detergent like Dawn should ensure that no compounds able to prevent a good bond are left on the original toy.
And just to be sure, wash and rinse your toy thoroughly twice in a row.
Once the toy is completely dry, you can move on to the next step.

Before activating the putty, make sure you know what you want to make beforehand since once the two parts are mixed, time is of the essence.
If you went with the "Make It Yours!" kit you should mix your colors before activating.
This way it'll leave you more time to actually work on your DIY sex toy.
Once your colors are blended, leave the mixture to cool at room temperature before activating it.

Once you've colored your putty and planned what you're going to make, it is now time to activate it!
The time window to mix and activate the putty, shape your additions ( or full on toy ) is about 8 minutes at room temperature.
And if it is especially hot or if you're mixing tiny amounts at a time, your body or outside heat will cut your working time in half, so be careful and try to work in a cool room if you can.

It's also worth noting that the activator is used in equal parts with the putty and will double the volume of putty you are working with.

To save yourself some time, it's also smart to follow Squarepeg's official method to activate your putty.

If you're feeling particularly tight on time, don't worry since you don't have to do all of it in one shot.
You can build your textures bit by bit or even build upon fully cured Peg Away Putty since it sticks very well to itself.
This way you can you can build up your modifications over multiple steps, like in this video below.

Once you're done, leave it to cure for about 2 to 3 hours.
The curing length is highly dependent on the temperature, and the colder it is the longer the curing process will take.

A 3-hour wait should keep you on the safe side.

If your new DIY sex toys are completely cured, you can now wash them once more with detergent and they're ready for action!

The Dodil

DIY dildo

The Dodil is made of body-safe malleable thermoplastic covered in silicone.
What this means is that, if warmed long enough, you'll be able to modify the Dodil to almost any shape of you want.

This option might be the easiest way to make a professional looking toy with minimal effort.
But it does come with its own limitations.
For one, you're limited to only one color choice, and even though the Teal is beautiful, more options would be nice.
You also won't be able to use this toy anally since it comes with no good way to make a stopper.
And finally, the matte surface silicone is quite draggy, so extra lube might be necessary for a more comfortable experience.

With that being said, here's how it's done:

All you have to do is boil some water and pour it into the provided Dodil Thermos along with the Dodil and close the lid.
They also offer a cheaper option without the thermos if you can supply your own.

After a 30 minute wait, empty the contents of the container and let it stand for a minute or two just so you don't burn yourself.
You'll have about 20 minutes to shape the Dodil to your liking, so don't wait too long.

From there, you can use your hands to bend and bump up your DIY dildo into shape.
If you'd like to add more subtle textures to your design, use the provided cord and wrap it around your creation while it "cures".

DIY dildo dodil

We've found that it's a little hard to get the right amount of tension with the included cord, so elastic bands are often better for that step.
You can also get pretty creative with the texturing process and strap a variety of textured objects onto your Dodil to add some interest.

Once you're satisfied with your creation, you can either let it cool on its own or submerge it in cold water so it solidifies in the way you intended to.
The resulting toy might be a little hard to some, but if you run it under some warm water before use, it should soften it just enough to make it more comfortable without changing its shape.

You can essentially repeat this process as much as you'd like, effectively turning this one dildo into as many toys as you'd like!

Making Sex Toys the Hobbyist and Pro Way

This is where things get serious.

So if you're looking for a finish closer to the toys you can buy off traditional sex shops, and Etsy stores and if you're planning on selling multiple copies of your creations, this method will work best for you.

Of course, this process is much more involved, but the quality you'll get out of your DIY dildo creations along with the profits you can make if you decide to sell them is much more rewarding than with the pre-made kits mentioned earlier.

This method is also the most expensive up front, but, once you're set up, the cost of making your actual DIY sex toys will be way cheaper than any other method discussed above.

If you want to keep the price down, we've isolated optional steps from the process.
They're not essential, but if you're looking for a truly professional finish and quality, you'll want to follow them still, especially if you intend on selling your toys.

Things you will need

To make shopping for materials as easy and cheap as possible, we made sure that all the links are from Amazon.

  1. Sculpey
  2. Platinum Cure Silicone
  3. Pigments
  4. Mann Ease Release 200
  5. Containers like boxes, pitchers or Legos
  6. Cups and sticks to mix your silicone

Optional items for a more professional finish:

  1. Mod Podge
  2. Air compressor
  3. Pressure pot for paint
  4. Degassing equipment
  5. 3D Printing equipment

The best silicone for your DIY sex toys

The only type of silicone safe for penetration is platinum cure silicone.
And the most popular supplier among indie toy makers is Smooth-On.

Now, Smooth-On makes all sorts of silicones that are unsafe for sex, so make sure you double check before investing in buckets of it.

Another important thing to consider is the hardness you want out of your toys.
This is measured with the Shore Durometer scale illustrated here by Smooth-On themselves.

Shore durometer scale

Phallophile Reviews has a pretty in-depth guide to sex toy hardness that could be handy if you wish to go down that rabbit hole.

The most important thing to consider is that the harder the silicone, the more likely you'll have to watch for bubbles getting trapped in your toys.
And unless you have a way to get rid of the bubbles ( more on this later ) you could be left with toys filled with little imperfections.

But if you want to stay on the safe side, the most popular options are Ecoflex for softer toys and Dragon Skin for harder but still realistically soft toys.

Ecoflex comes in 00-10, 00-20 and 00-30 hardness.
This means bubbles are going to be kept to a minimum, so it is perfect for someone trying to keep the cost of equipment to a minimum.

00-10 is usually out of the question because it is so soft, you won't be able to use it for insertion.  But it could be used as an outside layer of a dual density toy.

00-20  is perfect if you want to make masturbators, packers, very long depth toys and particularly floppy dildos. It's also a pretty good choice for the external layer of dual density toys.

00-30 is the hardest Ecoflex and should be good enough for a DIY dildo. But it is still soft enough that the toy won't stand on his own and flop about.
So if hardness is uncomfortable to you anally or vaginally, it could be a pretty decent option.

Dragon Skin comes in multiple hardnesses, but 10 A and 20 A should be the only ones you'll ever need.
In most cases, this means you'll at least need pressure curing set up. Even better if you invest in an additional vacuum degassing kit.
But don't despair because the more popular 10 A, does come in the NV version, which is low viscosity and should prevent you from having to Vacuum degas!

10 A is probably the only consistency you'll need, it comes in a variety pot lives and cure times, so pick the one that'll work best for your workflow. This should work well for realistically hard dildos and dual density cores.

20 A and beyond is better for harder sex toys like g-spot toys and dual density cores.  These will absolutely require some degassing on your part if you want a bubble-free sex toy.

Amazon doesn't seem to sell Smooth-On Silicone in Bulk, but the amounts provided there should be enough to get you started until figure out if this is for you.
If you wish to pursue the hobby, we suggest buying buckets of it directly from Smooth-On.

How to sculpt your DIY dildo

This could be done in a variety of ways.

Having an artistic eye will also help a lot since you'll be sculpting your toys from scratch, but it is also possible to cast real limbs and phallic objects like in the Clone A Willy section above to make your molds.

Like mentioned above, it's also very important you include a base since it'll not only make casting your toys easier, but it'll also allow your toys to stand on their own and become much safer to use in the process.

diy dildo sculpting

One of our favorite methods is simply using Sculpey to shape your toy.
Once you're happy with the results, bake your sculpture and let it cool.

Optional Pro Step: Adding a coat of Mod Podge to the finished sculpture will make your creation much smoother and this will translate in your final product.
To do this, simply brush it on or finger paint it thinly all over your sculpture and set it to dry.

3d printing diy dildo

Another great method is using 3D software like ZBrush, 3Ds Max, or Blender (which is free) to model your dildo.
Our personal favorite for organic shapes is Zbrush, but if you can't afford it, Blender will do just fine.

This has the benefit of giving you the option of offering smaller and larger versions of your toys easily.

Once this is done, send your files to either a 3d printing service website or to your own 3D printer.
You can find some good and cheap printers that can print large enough here or here for an even larger printing area.

When your Model is printed, give it a light sanding to remove the grain off your model and you're done!

How to make your silicone mold

First, you will need a good molding medium.
We like Mold Star 16 Fast by Smooth-On because it's simple to use, doesn't require any degassing and cures fast.

It's also a good middle ground in terms of hardness, and from there you can try harder molding mediums like the Mold Star 30 to see what you prefer to work with.

And while it isn't optimal, if you wish to keep your price to a minimum, you could always use DragonSkin 10 A or 20 A for both your toys and your mold, but anything softer will make molding your toys extremely difficult.

Next, you will need a container for holding your mold as it cures.
You can use a variety of containers here, may it be smooth boxes, water jugs or anything else that'll fit your toys and then some. Just make sure the container you use can contain viscous liquids without leaking or breaking.

Our favorite method is building our own custom Boxes with Legos.
This makes freeing your silicone molds easier and your boxes infinitely recyclable.
Just make sure the bottom of your box lands on the smooth side of your lego blocks to avoid any issues like so:

Lego Mold for DIY dildo

Sorry for the shitty 3D model... I gave all my legos to my nephew.

Of course, when molding, you won't have the box on its side like this and you'll want to have it standing with the hole facing up.

Next up is the Molding Process.

Put your sculpture or casting at the bottom of your box like in the picture below.
This is where a good base will come in handy.

DIY dildo

While it isn't entirely necessary, spray a thin coat of Mann Ease Release 200 inside the box and over your creation.
We like doing this just to be on the safe side of things and it'll prevent your silicone from sticking too much.

Otherwise, if you're casting an object already made of silicone, the Mann Ease Release 200 is mandatory because it'll prevent the silicone of the mold and the object from bonding to each other.

Now you will need to mix your molding medium thoroughly and fast enough so you don't exceed the pot-life time limit in your instructions.
So make sure you're mixing enough to cover your creation completely.
Mold Star 16 is simple enough to mix since all you'll need is a 1:1 mixture.
The two parts are of different colors, so mix until the whole color of the mix becomes uniform.

If you're using any other uncolored silicone, you could tint one part with pigment and leave the other clear to make sure both parts are mixed properly.

It's also a good idea to use mixing bowls and utensils that you won't mind never using again in the kitchen.
We like using dedicated graduated pots because they're cheap and make measuring easier as you mix.

Now is time to pour your mixture over your creation.
The trick here is to pour a thin stream of silicone from as high as you can while still being accurate and aim at the side of your container while letting the silicone settle around your sculpture.
Do this carefully until the sculpture is entirely covered.

DIY dildo mold pour

This process will prevent bubbles from getting trapped in the mix.
Continue pouring until your whole sculpture is covered.
Set the remaining silicone aside in its mixing pot while you let the mixture cure for the amount of time shown in your silicone instructions.

Optional Pro Step: Pressure curing will also help to remove any bubbles that could get trapped in your mold. This can be done for relatively cheap with a pressure pot for paints and a simple air compressor.
Follow the steps found in this video to set up your kit.

Just put your box containing the sculpture and silicone mixture inside of your pot and let it cure at about 40 PSI of pressure for the entirety of the curing process.

Once it is cured, make sure to release the pressure before attempting to open your pot.

Before attempting to free your sculpture from the mold, check on the remaining silicone in your mixing bowl. If it is solid and easy to remove, curing should be about done.

Remove the sculpture as well as the box carefully so you're only left with the silicone mold and nothing else.

Voilà! You now have a perfectly reusable mold for replicating your DIY sex toys over and over again.

How to color your silicone

DIY dildo color pigments

Now we're finally at the step of actually making a DIY dildo!
But before any of this, you'll most likely want to color your silicone to a color of your liking.

To achieve this, you will need some good pigments like the great Silc Pig by Smooth-On.
A container or a cheap sampler kit will be enough to make tons of dildos and mix pretty much any color you'll need, so don't worry about price too much.
But the more you'll mix, the brighter and more saturated the colors will get.

Smooth-On also makes a pretty cool glow in the dark pigment called the Glow Worm.
It comes in green and blue and just like the Silk pig, the more you put in, the bigger glow you'll get.

Cosmetic Mica is another great option if you're looking for more colors, sparkles or a real deep black.
Just make sure you're buying a body-safe Mica since not all of them are good for internal use.

How to mix your colors

Mixing colors is a lot like mixing any other types of paints.
But our favorite method is to color only the Part A of two silicone parts with the pigments.
This will not only leave you more time to color your silicone but also, it'll ensure a uniform mix of the two parts when you're finally at that point.

If you'd like to know how to create marbled designs, gradients or what have you, Candiru's Vimeo page is an excellent resource with many more advanced coloring methods.

Once you have your mold handy and you're ready to mix the colored part A to part B, proceed just like in the molding process.

Optional Pro Step: At this point, if you're using a Silicone with a high viscosity, you might want to do some silicone degassing to get rid of as many bubbles as possible.

You'll need a kit
like this and follow the process found in this handy video to do so.

It is now finally time to pour the silicone into your mold.

This step is just like when you poured the mold except it is now mandatory to spray some Mann Ease Release 200 into your mold beforehand.
Otherwise, the two silicones will bond and you'll have to make a new mold from scratch.

So repeat all the steps from the mold pouring process above but this time around, you'll be pouring into your silicone mold.
Now set your DIY dildo to cure in the open or in the pressure chamber at around 40 PSI for the amount of time required by the silicone you're using.

Once it this is done, pull it out, give it a good wash with some grease-fighting detergent and you're done!

Other advanced methods

This of course only scratches the surface of toy making and if you wish to push the limits of what is possible, you're only limited by your own ingeniosity and creativity.

Here are a few ideas from other toy makers of what can be done:

With some additional steps, you could make dual density toys like in the video below.

Or add a cum tube to make your own ejaculating DIY dildo!

You could even use prep bowls like these on top of your molds to create suction cups during the curing process.

DIY dildo suction cup

Using a similar method, adding a bullet hole or Vac-U-Lock plug to your base is also another popular option.
Just make sure you use something like a piece of cardboard like in the clone a willy entry to hold your objects so they don't sink into the silicone during the curing process.

So go on and explore my friends, and we can't wait to see ( and maybe even buy & advertise ) your DIY dildo creations in the future!
